The Story Behind Lisimbein: A Childhood Memory from Curaçao

Every design in the Curaçao Memories collection tells a story rooted in my childhood on the island. This is the story behind Lisimbein, and the centipede that started it all.

Every design in our Curaçao Memories collection tells a story rooted in my experiences growing up on the island. One of the most personal is the Lisimbein, inspired by a humorous, slightly nerve-wracking afternoon involving a centipede. The word lisimbein means centipede in Papiamentu, the language of Curaçao.

How it happened

It started during a family visit to my aunt's home. A typical sunny Curaçao afternoon. I was hanging out with my younger cousin and niece, playing and enjoying the day, when my cousin suddenly noticed something on my back. His face went pale and he started shouting in a mix of panic and excitement.

"What's wrong?" I asked, confused.

Before I could turn around, my father rushed over. His expression shifted from curiosity to serious concern in the space of a second. Without a word, he raised his hand and gave me a firm slap on my back.

I was startled. I spun around to see what had happened, and there, on the ground, a large centipede crawling away. It had been creeping up my back, maybe close to my neck.

It was funny and slightly unsettling at the same time. It immediately became a family story we still laugh about today.

What the design represents

The Lisimbein design isn't just about a centipede. It represents those unpredictable moments that come with growing up in a tropical environment. The balance between adventure and comfort, the unique blend of nature and family life that shaped my childhood. Through this design I wanted to capture the spirit of Curaçao and the small, unexpected moments that made it special.

The Curaçao Memories collection

Lisimbein is part of the larger Curaçao Memories collection. Each design draws from my personal experiences and cultural roots on the island: vibrant tropical colours, the lively atmosphere of family gatherings, the warmth that runs through everything.

The goal is more than fashion. It's a way to share a piece of Curaçao and its stories. Whether you're from the island or simply appreciate designs with a meaningful backstory, this collection is crafted to reflect both style and substance.

Explore Lisimbein

The Lisimbein design lives across hoodies, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. The artwork is part of our Island Minimal style: simple line art and clean shapes that convey the story without shouting about it. Versatile enough to fit your everyday wardrobe, but always carrying a piece of the memory behind it.

Why stories matter in fashion

I believe every piece of clothing should tell a story. Fashion is more than what you wear. It's a way to connect with your roots, express your identity, and carry your memories with you. When you wear a piece from Curaçao Memories, you're not just wearing a design. You're carrying a small piece of the island with you.
